Students will observe embryonic neurulation in 33- and 48-hour chick embryos by preparing live specimens for observation, observing prepared whole mounts and examining serial transverse sections. Students will observe embryonic neurulation in the 4mm frog embryo by observing prepared whole mounts, examining selected transverse sections.
As one can easily see, the embryo at 96 hours already takes on a new form than that of 33 hours. In this diagram, the ventricle is established, along with the auditory vesicle and the neural tube. Even more fascinating, the embryo has began to form its lens and optic cup. The yolk stalk, seen stretching from the middle of the embryo, provides nourishment during the most crucial stages of development. The neural tube, as implied by its name, is the part of the embryo that represents the central nervous system.
